CHAPTER 24
Mari
He just gave up his bed for me and made one on the floor for himself. I had not been expecting him to do that, and I felt so bad that he was now lying on the hard floor. I should have just gone and slept on the couch. I was really starting to feel like the worst kind of burden to this kind, thoughtful man. And when he had whisked me off my feet and laid me down on his bed, my heart raced with visions of a bride being whisked off her feet and across the threshold of her new home. How was it possible to feel such a strong connection to a man I had only been dating for a couple of weeks, especially when all I remembered was a couple of days worth of memories of him? He couldnât sleep on the floor in his own house. It wasnât right.
âShawn, you canât sleep on the floor,â I said as I rolled to the edge, still tucked into my comforter like a sausage in a burrito.
âIt will be fine Mari, I have slept on much worse camping with my brother,â looking up at me with a smile on his face.
âBut this is your bed and you shouldnât have to be uncomfortable in your own home.â
âWell, what do you suppose I do then Mari?â He propped himself up on his elbow, lying on his side, watching me with a devilish gleam in his eyes. Boy did he look good in his pajamas. This was probably my most favorite look on him thus far: flannel pajamas with a black fitted T-shirt and his wavy hair a bit tousled, mischief dancing in his eyes. And now I was just staring at him. I had to look ridiculous, my face sticking out of a blanket like a little baby glow worm.
âYou could sleep up here too,â I said, feeling brave. âI am literally wrapped up in this thing and your bed is huge. We could even put pillows up as a barrier if you're afraid I might try out some of my moves on you,â raising my eyebrows at him, a big smile stretched over what could be seen of my face.
âI am a gentleman, Mari,â he said emphasizing the I. âAnd gentlemen do not sleep in the same bed as ladies they are not married to,â sweeping hand from his head to his feet. âHence, the bed on the ground.â
âWell I am a lady my good sir,â putting even more of an emphasis on the I than he had. âAnd I am saying it is okay for this one night. I wonât ruin your reputation. I promise.â I wriggled my hand out of my burrito, making what I hoped was the scouts honor sign with my hand.
âRaise up one more finger Mari. That is literally just a peace sign without spreading your fingers apart.â He grabbed my hand and pried my fingers apart, helping me put the right fingers up and laughing at my silliness again.
